Picture Books for Christmas
What You'll Find on This Page
December is the perfect month to curl up with a book – especially under or near a Christmas tree! We love to read all year round, but there is something extra-special about reading next to a fireplace or Christmas tree.
Here are our favorite children’s books to read at Christmas time. You may also like this collection of nativity books and crafts, our Christmas picture book advent calendar, and this collection of Christmas picture books and activities.
Nativity Themed Picture Books
Room for a Little One brings children right into the stable, telling the story through the eyes of compassionate barn animals.
Who is Coming to Our House? also adopts the perspective of barn animals. In this story, they are busy preparing for the arrival of Joseph and Mary and Baby Jesus
In Mortimer’s Christmas Manger, a mouse gets frustrated over nativity scene characters cluttering up “his” house over and over – until he realizes who the house actually belongs to. There’s a lovely ending for the mouse, too.
Christmas Is Here combines poetic language from the King James version of the Bible with simple illustrations.
Santa Themed Picture Books
Celebrated illustrator Lois Ehlert delights with cut paper illustrations – including unusually shaped pages – in Red & Green. Wander through the house where everyone is asleep – except a small mouse.
Legendary author J.R.R. Tolkien wrote his children Letters from Father Christmas every year. Enjoy the complete collection in this magical book.
In Stowaway in a Sleigh, a curious cat crawls into Santa’s bag – and gets taken home to the North Pole. Will she ever make it home?
The Polar Express captures hearts across generations with stunning illustrations and engaging text.
Jan Brett is an incredible illustrator. Her version of The Night Before Christmas is a family read-aloud must-own.
Very young readers will adore All Abord! The Christmas Train. This delightful board book combines three things young children love: trains, lift the flap books, and Christmas!
